Paulstretch, a time stretching algorithm that can stretch samples to absurd lengths, has been around for quite some time; however, with the recent release of the free iOS app PaulXStretch it's never been more accessible. In today's video we'll take a look at how to stretch and alter samples on the app, then treat and resample them into the SP404 MKII.
For this track, I used a remix I made of the song "Robot Soft Exorcism" by Thrice as the base sample that was sent through PaulXStretch on iOS. Using the Stretch function I slowed the song down drastically, then used the built in EQ to remove some of the low end mud and tame the high end. One thing to keep in mind when slowing sounds down is the added low end frequencies that may appear. From there, I sent the sound into the SP404 MKII for effects processing, resampling chords and sequencing the drums.
Incorporating Paulstretch into a Dawless Setup:
This track just scratches the surface of what can be done in a DAWless setup using Paulstretch. In the future, I want to work more on resampling the generated sounds into the SP and creating more fully fleshed out tracks with additional instrumentation. One of the Dawless setups that I think would fit best with this type of sound design is the Generative Circuit Tracks and SP workflow I've been working on. The App could function as a base drone, with additional resampled sounds sequenced on the SP, while the CIrcuit plays generative arpeggios and chords.
Does Paulstretch have a place in you workflow? Let me know if you use it or have ideas for how to incorporate it.
