Creating Radically Different Sample Flips with an Ambient Effect | Beatmaking with Koala Sampler & SP404 MK2

Updated: Jul 30

Who would've thought that Paulstretch, a long form time stretch effect, is a beatmaking secret weapon? While it might seem like an app for ambient, sleepy-time music, its sound design potential makes it perfect for creating lush soundscapes to throw under a beat.

In this livestream, we go over my workflow for creating radically different-sounding sample flips using the ambient effect Paulstretch and the Koala Sampler & SP404 MK2 combo.

Workflow Breakdown

  1. Create a Sample: I started by creating a jazzy piano chord progression in Logic for iPad.

  2. Stretch with Paulstretch: Sample the piano progression into Paulstretch to stretch it into a very long drone.

  3. Chop the Sample: Chop the drone sample into 4 pads in Koala Sampler or sampler of your choosing.

Pro Tip:

Take note of the micro moments that occur throughout the drone due to chord changes and fill notes. While in the original they may be small, insignificant sounds, due to the elongated sound of Paulstretch, these could become very harmonically interesting segments ripe for chopping.

With that, you've got a drastically different sounding sample than what you started with. The rest of the workflow follows usual Koala Sampler & SP404 MK2 beatmaking practices.
