Digitakt & A Synth Are All You Need For Beatmaking | There’s Something Magical About Slice Machine

The Digitakt is a jack of all trades, capable of being a powerful drum machine, sequencer, or even sampler; but each comes with some limitations. Today, we're going to see just how capable the Digitakt is as an all-in-one machine or groovebox and see if we can make a full track as if we were in a DAW with B-Section, fill, and structure, using just the Digitakt. Since it is a sampler and really opens up when you start to use MIDI as it gives you four-voice polyphony, we're going to pair it with the Korg Minilogue to sample in. We'll then use the slice machine workflow in the Digitakt to completely chop up the samples that we throw in it and really change it all around, which is, I think, one of the best features of the Digitakt and what really separates it for me from a DAW.

Why use Slice Machine:

Slice Machine on the Digitakt chops a long form sample into small segments (you can choose between 4 to 64). This gives a lot of flexibility for creating individual chords out of a progression all while remaining on just one of the 8 audio tracks of the Digitakt.

The Digitakt is a powerful tool in any setup

Not only is this a useful hack for getting polyphony on the monophonic audio tracks, but jamming on the slices can lead to some beautiful happy accidents and new ideas. Slice Machine doesn't stop there, though. The pitch, filter, ADSR, and LFO can all be utilized from a sound design standpoint to create completely new sounds out of your sample sources. In the video above, we turn a lush Minilogue pad into short synthwave-style plucks, all within the Digitakt's powerful slice machine.
